The CrossFit Regionals Veteran Sets His Sights High.
The 2018 CrossFit Open was slated to be a rather routine and uneventful step for OPEX Sponsored Athlete Austin O’Neal on his path to the South-West Regionals and ultimately, the CrossFit Games. In fact, much of his training was focused on the regionals competition rather than the Open. However, that all changed during the second workout of the 2018 CrossFit Open, 18.2.
“I’ve always recognized that the Open is not going to be something I win at, it’s not going to be something I’m terrible at. The second week I got hit with a massive penalty, which changed up the Open for the rest of the weeks for me. So yeah, I have a bit of a chip on my shoulder about it. I’m a bit mad about the circumstances, but I’m using that to enhance my training.”
Austin was hit with severe penalties that altered his 18.2 score so greatly that it nearly jeopardized his entire competitive season, almost rendered him incapable of making it to 2018 South Regionals. In a sport in which seconds can mean the difference between hundreds of positions, the result was devastating. Despite this, Austin managed to change his approach to tackling the CrossFit Open and rally himself back into the top twenty in his region.
“The plan for regionals is to get on the podium, I want to get to the Games. That’s what I’m here for, that’s what I’m practicing for, that’s what my life is for.”
Austin plans to direct the rage he felt at that setback towards the competition floor in the upcoming South Regional. He will again prove to others what he is capable of and how far he will take it to achieve victory and secure his dreams.
“That chip on my shoulder was not a smart thing for them to do.”
