Career coach is a decision.
For Coaches Building a Career, Not a Job.
The OPEX Method is a coach development experience for people who already coach real 1:1 clients. Build your coaching system, wrap a business around it, and build the engine that fills it, with a mentor who runs the model.
Not a restart, a level up: ten live weeks with a mentor who runs the model, where you build your coaching system, wrap a business around it, and build the
engine that fills it.
Trusted by Coaches Who Don’t Cut Corners.
“The level of professionalism from the OPEX Team, from instructors and mentors, to the content, to the process, was at a level I haven’t interfaced within the fitness education space.”

After the Method:
The OPEX Coaching Mentorship
Some coaches finish the Method wanting to go deeper with one-on-one mentorship. For them, there’s the OPEX Coaching Mentorship: eight additional weeks with a 1:1 mentor, built entirely around your plan. It’s open only to OPEX Method graduates, because we can’t individualize on top of principles you haven’t learned yet. You don’t need to decide now. You’ll talk about it on your Direction Call, once you have your business plan and know your gaps. Many coaches close their gaps inside the Method, and that’s the point.
Who Is It For?
This is for you if you coach real people 1:1, you’ve decided coaching is your career or you’re ready to, and you’d rather build a profitable practice
than a following. In practice that’s usually:
- A personal trainer who knows the hourly model has a ceiling.
- A group instructor moving to Individual Design.
- A coach with 15–30 clients going remote or hybrid without burning out.
- A coach with 5+ years who wants a method to match the skill.
- An online coach with clients and no repeatable system.
- A gym owner adding Individual Design as a premium service.
- You have the certifications and want the system that ties them together.
- You’d rather build a profitable sustainable practice than a following.
This isn’t for you if:
- You haven’t coached anyone 1:1 yet. Start with LearnRx.
- You want low-ticket programs to sell and not coach people 1:1.
- You want a certificate to hang on the wall.
Coaches Who
Made the Decision.
OPEX coaches price Individual Design at $300–500+ per client per month.
Here’s what that did for three of them.
Finally, a Toolbox
“I had all these tools, but I didn’t have a toolbox to put them in, or an order with which to use them.”
Brett LivaudaisThe Whole Person, Not the Program
“I love that it’s not just the program design but it also focuses on the athlete’s lifestyle and behavior. It truly feels like a complete guidance.”
Graciela MarascoIt Made It a Career
“I feel like it has made it a career.”
Shanna GuzmanHalf the Programming Time. Higher Quality.
“The time that I spend programming on a weekly basis per client has dropped in half just over the last 3 months, and the quality is even higher than it was.”
Brett LivaudaisROI in No Time
“It looks expensive, the case studies are serious work, but the knowledge and experience you get will transform how you coach. You’ll get ROI in no time.”
John LivingstoneBetter Consults, Better Clients
“The coaching that my clients receive now is far better, just more clear in the way that I want to approach consultations.”

Who Teaches You,
and Who Guides You
The OPEX Method is taught by the people who built it, and you’re guided through it by a mentor who runs a practice on this model. Ten coaches per mentor. Your mentor reads your intake before Week 1, leads your Thursday labs, and sits across from you on your Direction Call.
OPEX Founder
James FitzGerald
James founded OPEX in 1999 and built Individual Design before it had a name: one coach, one client, a program written from an assessment of the person
rather than a template for the goal. Twenty-seven years and more than 10,000 coaches later, it’s still the
method, and he still teaches it. You will learn from James inside the OPEX Method digital content.
Head Instructor OPEX CEO
Carl Hardwick
Carl came to OPEX as a student in 2011, looking for energy systems. What he found was a way of coaching the whole person, and he’s spent the fifteen years since building a career on it: four group gyms, then an Individual Design gym that became four, then OPEX itself, where he joined as a mentor in 2016 and has led the company since 2020. Before that: college football, six years as a U.S. Army combat medic, and a battalion PT program for 3,000 soldiers that taught him what a system has to do.
Inside the Method, Carl teaches Weeks 1 through 8, reads every intake form, and reviews every final project himself. His aim is the one OPEX has always had: coaches who see the person in front of them, charge what the work is worth, and build a career they’re proud of. He’s a husband and father, grounded in his faith, and the things he asks of coaches, clarity, consistency, and commitment, are the things he asks of himself.
Marketing Instructor OPEX CMO
Kandace Hudspeth
Kandace has spent 23 years leading brand strategy, first for some of the world’s largest brands at the agencies that built them, and since 2014 for fitness companies, including CMO roles at Bodybuilding.com and HYBRID Performance Method before returning to OPEX. She hosts Marketing For Fitness Coaches, a weekly show on making marketing a sustainable part of a coaching practice rather than a chore bolted onto it.
Inside the Method, Kandace teaches Weeks 9 and 10: your positioning, your message, your offer, the acquisition path that fits the practice you’ve chosen, and the weekly workflow that keeps clients coming to you after the cohort ends.
Assistant Instructor
Ashley Brownell
Ashley brings over 15 years of experience in education, specializing in special education, along with her experience as a fitness coach and business owner. After discovering the OPEX Method as a client in 2018, she went on to complete the OPEX Coach Certificate Program (CCP) and now co-owns OPEX Round Rock with her husband. She also specializes in pregnancy, postpartum, and menopause coaching, with a passion for helping individuals build sustainable health and fitness through a personalized, human-centered approach.
Inside the Method, Ashley combines her background in education and coaching to support coaches throughout their professional development. She is passionate about helping coaches bridge the gap between education and application, build confidence in their coaching abilities, and develop the skills needed to create meaningful, long-term relationships with their clients.
Your OPEX Mentors
Learn from Master Coaches Who’ve Built the Practices You Want.
Our mentor team consists of successful OPEX coaches who’ve mastered both the methodology and business of premium individual design. They understand the challenges you face because they’ve overcome them themselves, building thriving practices using the exact system you’ll learn.
Iñaki Roza
Iñaki has been in the fitness business for more than ten years. He built the most successful CrossFit gym in Mexico, then transitioned it to Individual Design and opened OPEX Condesa in 2018 with 50 clients, growing to 180 while holding 96 percent retention. When the pandemic closed his doors for six months, the business stayed profitable, which is what a real system is for: surviving the year you didn’t plan for. His purpose is helping clients, coaches, and owners live more inspired lives, and he’d tell you he gets to live one as a result.
“I’m the mentor for the coach moving from group to Individual Design, or the gym owner adding it as a premium service, who wants to grow without losing the retention that makes growth worth having.”
Henry Toraño
Henry has spent more than 15 years in the industry as a coach, gym owner, and educator, with experience across strength and conditioning, body composition, metabolic health, endurance, and individualized program design. What connects that range is a conviction that great coaching isn’t a deeper store of knowledge but the ability to think clearly about the person in front of you and make a decision you can defend: not just what to prescribe, but why, when, and for whom. As a mentor he is less interested in handing coaches answers than in building the thought process that finds them, and he expects the coaches he works with to question their own assumptions as readily as his.
“I’m the mentor for the coach who’s done chasing intensity and generic programming, and wants to sharpen their assessment, understand physiology well enough to use it, and turn complex ideas into practical coaching decisions.”
Melissa Bernstein
Melissa owns and coaches at OPEX KURA, where she has built an Individual Design practice with the kind of retention most coaches assume isn’t possible, and a team of coaches who have turned coaching into careers. She is known for building relationships people want to stay in. Her “no bad breakups” approach means coaching people well through every chapter: welcoming them in, earning their trust, evolving with their lives, and leaving the door open when their time as a client ends, because people who feel cared for return, refer, and stay connected to the community long after they leave. She has a particular passion for coaching women through the long arc of their health, from preconception and postpartum through perimenopause, so they arrive at each new season understanding their bodies rather than starting over.
“I’m the mentor for the coach who writes a good program and knows that isn’t enough: who wants to communicate their value, sell and renew with confidence, and become someone clients trust through years of change.”
Steve Volke
Steve has coached for more than 15 years and has owned OPEX Regina since 2015, working with a few thousand clients in person and remotely. He got into coaching because of an injury: his wife was told her foot was as good as it would get, and he took that as a challenge, learning everything he could and working with her until she had her life back. Helping someone come back from an injury is still the work he finds most rewarding. With a background in business, he’s drawn to coaching professionals and owners through stress, nutrition, and the demands of running something, and it shapes how he mentors: direct, systems-minded, and generous with his time for coaches who match it.
“I’m the mentor for the coach who wants deeper client relationships, more clients, and systems that make the practice run smoother while making more money. I’m direct, and I’ll go the extra mile if you will.”

APPLY NOWFAQ
How much time does it take?
During the cohort: three 75-minute live sessions a week (Tuesday, Thursday, Friday at 1:00pm EST) for ten weeks. The digital content runs at your own pace. Your mentor sets a realistic plan for the time you have before your semester starts.
Is this CCP?
Yes. The OPEX Coaching Certificate Program is the curriculum inside the Method. What’s changed is everything around it: the mentor, the OPEX Experience, the live cohort, and a credential you earn on a real client.
Do I need to finish the digital content before the cohort starts?
No. Every lecture is taught as though no one has watched it. You’ll need all of it finished before your final project.
I’ve coached for years. Will I learn anything new?
The Method isn’t more information. It’s the system that connects principles, and you go through it as a client before you coach it. Coaches with 15 and 30 years in have said the same thing.
Can I join if I have completed a previous version of OPEX CCP or want to go through this version again?
Yes, we frequently have OPEX alumni, CCP Coaches, and Ambassadors that go through the OPEX Method several times. Although the principles and systems are tight in every version, the delivery is iterated and delivered custom to each cohort’s needs.
What if I can’t make every live session?
Recordings are provided and stored in LearnRx. Coaches join from 40+ countries, and sessions are scheduled with that in mind.
Do you get me clients?
No. In Weeks 9 and 10 you build the engine that brings clients to you, and you own it. Graduates are listed in the OPEX coach directory.
Is this a certification?
It’s a credential you earn. You coach a real client through the Method, Carl reviews the work and provides feedback, and you’re listed and named publicly when you pass.
When can I apply?
Anytime. There are two semesters a year, Spring and Fall, and we accept applications for both all year. You choose your semester when you apply, and seats go to accepted coaches until each semester’s 40 are filled.
When does my year start?
When your seat is confirmed. Your mentor onboards you right away, and the Foundation runs until your semester begins.
Is 1:1 mentorship included?
The Method includes a named mentor who onboards you, runs your weekly lab, is your primary point of contact through the program, and leads your Direction Call. The OPEX Coaching Mentorship is a separate eight-week, 1:1 program, open only to Method graduates.
Does this work for remote coaches?
Yes. Remote coaching is harder to do well, and most people doing it aren’t. The Method is built to work in person, remote, or both.
What if I’m not a fit?
We’ll tell you why on the call, and point you to the best next step for where you are.
Do I have to use CoachRx?
You build your system inside it week by week, and sixteen weeks are included. The principles travel anywhere. The build is just faster in the software the method was written into.
