OPENING A MICRO-GYM: PROS & CONS

If you want the flexibility of being your own boss and running things your own way, minus the overhead costs and risk of opening a large facility, then the micro-gym may just be the solution to your coaching career dreams.

Starting your in-person coaching business from your garage or basement is a great way to build up a roster of clients, whether or not you plan on outgrowing the space or keeping things small.

One of our most successful OPEX Gyms, OPEX Abbotsford, was started when owner Firass El Fateh began personal training out of his garage.

“I know what we’re doing keeps the client, coach and owner in mind. I truly believe this is the right system for everyone. It puts everyone in a place to win in the long term.”

And OPEX coach Clelia Stefanini mixes the remote and in-person model by coaching a number of her local clients from her basement gym, particularly at the start of their fitness journey.

“Initially, I decided to build my basement gym studio for in-person sessions to conduct my initial assessments and monthly consults with clients. But quickly I realized it was an opportunity to build a branch of my coaching practice to support several of my clients who wanted to work in-person.

The plan is for these multiple in-person sessions to build the base support of learning and understanding movement as well as the supporting lifestyle and nutrition choices (~3-6 months). Then the client graduates to remote (~2-5 years).”

Like everything else, opening a micro-gym comes with its pros and cons. Consider these when you’re deciding whether or not it’s the right choice for you.
